Cells are Gram-stain-negative, straight or slightly curved rods (0.25-0.8 µm×1.8-15 µm) and motile. Chemo-organotrophic and obligate anaerobes that usually grow with cellobiose, glucose and maltose. Acetate, lactate, ethanol, H2 and CO2 are the main fermentation products. Optimum growth occurs at 60-65 °C, the genomic size ranges from 2.9 to 3.2 Mb, and G+C content varies from 42 to 51 mol%. The type species is Thermoclostridium stercorarium.
