Cells are spore-forming rods. Obligately anaerobic. Optimum growth normally occurs under mesophilic (28-41 °C) and around neutral pH conditions. Cellulose, cellobiose, glucose and xylose are utilized as sole carbon and energy sources. The genomic size range is 4.1-6.4 Mb and the G+C content is in a narrow range of 36-42 mol%. Cellulosome architectures are also present in the genus. The type species of the genus is Ruminiclostridium cellobioparum.
