Etymology
L. n. from M. Young Orr, the botanist who first described the leaf glands of <i>D. sansibarensis</i> (syn. <i>macroura</i>).

Members of this genus are Gram-stain negative, facultatively anaerobic, oxidase positive, non-motile, non-spore forming coccobacilli (0.9-1.1 μm). The dominant fatty acids are C16:0 and C18:1 w7c and summed feature 3 (which includes iso-C15:0 2-OH or C16:1 w7c, or both). The respiratory quinone is ubiquinone 8. The DNA G + C is approximately 67.4 mol%. All known strains so far were isolated from leaf acumens of D. sansibarensis. The type species is O. dioscoreae.
