The family was identified on the basis of comparative 16S rRNA gene-based analysis, the results of which indicated that the genus forms a separate phylogenetic clade. Members of this family are Gram-staining-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive. The major fatty acid is C18 : 1ω7c/ω6c. The polar lipids contain phosphatidylglycerol (PG). The major quinone is Q-10. The family Acuticoccaceae belongs to the order Rhizobiales of the class Alphaproteobacteria. The type genus is Acuticoccus.
