General information
Description and emendation
Rod-shaped cells with pearled or slightly irregular sides and rounded ends, about 3-5 µm long and 0.4-0.6 µm diameter. Non-motile. Does not exhibit gliding motility. Gram-negative. Does not form endospores or resting stages. Does not accumulate poly-β-hydroxybutyrate as an intracellular reserve product and does not have an arginine dihydrolase system. Requires Na+ for growth. Strictly aerobic. Chemoorganotroph. Cytochrome oxidase-, catalaseand alkaline phosphatase-positive. Does not decompose agar, starch, alginate, gelatin and chitinase.
1: Some species may display gliding motility and grow without sea water or Na+ ions. Aerobic. Produce non-diffusible carotenoid pigments. Cytochrome oxidase-, catalase- and alkaline phosphatase-positive. The major respiratory quinone is MK-6. The predominant cellular fatty acids are straight-chain saturated and unsaturated and branched-chain unsaturated fatty acids C15:0, iso-C15:0, iso-C15:1, iso-C17 3-OH and summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15:0 2-OH and/or C16:1 ω7). The main polar lipid is phosphatidylethanolamine.
2: Positive or negative for catalase.
