Gram-negative rod-shaped cells with rounded ends, dividing by binary fission. Does not exhibit motility and gliding motility. Colonies on marine agar are saffron-colored or bright orange, circular, and convex. Produces carotenoid pigments, but not flexirubin pigments. Strictly aerobic and chemoheterotrophic. Requires NaCl for growth. Catalase-positive, urease-positive, and arginine dehydrolase-positive, but oxidase-negative. Does not produce indole and acid from glucose. Degrades gelatin, DNA, starch, casein, and elastin. The major fatty acid types were branched acids and hydroxy acids.
