Coenonia cells are Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, microaerophilic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacteria. The major fatty acid components of all strains examined are branched-chain fatty acids, including 13:0 iso, 15:0 iso, 15:0 anteiso, 15:0 iso 3-OH, 16:0 3-OH and 17:0 iso 3-OH. The DNA G+C content of representative strains was 35-36 mol%.
