Flaviramulus Einen and Øvreås 2006
General information
Description and emendation
Cells are Gram-negative. Morphology varies with age of culture. Cells in exponential growth phase are rods, 0.2-0.3 μm in diameter and 1-3 μm in length. Cells in stationary phase are pleomorphic, 0.2-0.3 μm in diameter but with lengths ranging from 1 to 30 μm. Branched and curled cells are also seen in stationary-phase cultures. As cultures age, cells degenerate into spheroplasts ranging from 0.15 to 1 μm in diameter. Cells are motile, obligately aerobic heterotrophs. Cells contain yellow and orange carotenoids. Flexirubin-type pigments are not found. Menaquinone-6 is the major respiratory quinone.
1: The polar lipids of the two analysed type strains consist of phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and three unidentified lipids.
