General information
Description and emendation
Rod-shaped cells with slightly irregular sides and pointed ends, approx. 0.8-1.8 × 0.4-0.9 μm. Gram-negative. Does not form endospores or resting stages. Does not accumulate poly- β-hydroxybutyrate as an intracellular reserve product and does not have an arginine dihydrolase system. Aerobic. Anaerobic growth occurs by fermentation of D-glucose by anaerobic respiration of nitrate. Chemoorganotroph. Cytochrome oxidase-negative, catalase-positive.
1: Cells are motile by gliding. Buds may be produced. Do not form endospores or resting stages. Facultative anaerobes. Cytochrome oxidase-positive, catalase-positive and alkaline phosphatase-positive. May require Na+ ions for growth. Produces non-diffusible carotenoid pigments. The main cellular fatty acids are iso-C15:0, C15:0, iso-C15:1 G, C15:1 ω6c, iso-C15:0 3-OH, iso-C17:0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (comprising any combination of C16:1 ω7c, C16:1 ω7t and iso-C15:0 2-OH). The major isoprenoid quinone is MK-6. Phosphatidylethanolamine is the only phospholipid identified. The G+C content of the DNA is 34-36 mol%.
2: Tween 20 is not utilized by cells. The major polar lipids are phosphatidylethanolamine, seven aminolipids and one unidentified polar lipid.
