N.L. fem. dim. n. <i>Lutaonella</i>, named after Lutao (Green Island), a small volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean, the geographical origin of the type strain.

Cells are Gram-staining-negative, strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming and non-motile short rods that accumulate poly-β-hydroxybutyrate acid granules as polar inclusion bodies. Oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. The predominant fatty acids are iso-C15:0 and iso-C17:0 3-OH. The major menaquinone is MK-6. The DNA G+C content of the type species is 39.7 mol%.
