N.L. fem. n. <i>Zunongwangia</i>, named in honor of Zu-Nong Wang, who has made great contributions to the development of microbiology in China.

Cells are Gram-negative, rod-shaped, nonmotile, nonspore-forming, strictly aerobic, oxidase-positive and catalase-positive. Flexirubin-type pigments are absent. MK-6 is the predominant respiratory quinone. The main fatty acids are i-C15:0, Summed Feature 3 (comprising i-C15:0 2OH and/or C16:1 ω7c), i-C17:0 3OH, i-C15:1 G, i-C17:1 ω9c, C15:0 and i-C15:0 3OH. The DNA G+C content of the type species is 35.8 mol%.
