Sulfurospirillum Schumacher et al. 1993
General information
Description and emendation
Slender cells, curved, vibrioid to spirilloid, 0.3 to 0.5 µm wide and 1.0 to 3 µm long, helical chains of two or more cells may occur. Motile by polar flagellation. Gram-negative. Nonsporeforming. Microaerophilic, with a respiratory type of metabolism, succinate, fumarate, malate or pyruvate but not acetate oxidized. Oxidase-positive. Carbohydrates are neither oxidized nor fermented. Under anoxic conditions fumarate and malate are fermented. With hydrogen or formate as electron donor and acetate plus hydrogen carbonate as carbon sources oxidized nitrogen and sulfur compounds (but not sulfate) and elemental sulfur can be used as electron acceptors. No growth in the presence of 1% glycine or 3.5% NaC1. Found in anoxic or microoxic aquatic freshwater habitats with decaying organic matter. The DNA G+C content is 38-42 mol%.
1: Some species are able to use arsenate, selenate, PCE or trichloroethene as terminal electron acceptors.
