Description and emendation
Original Description
expand / minimize
Motile peritrichously flagellated rods, not encapsulated. Aerobic and facultatively anaerobic. Grows readily on ordinary media at 4°C to 37°C, but not at 41°C; can use citrate as the sole C source. Colonies on nutrient agar are smooth, low convex, moist, gray and easily emulsified in saline, or rough (R), dry and do not emulsify well in saline; colonies are generally 2-4 mm in diameter. Glucose, lactose and other carbohydrates are fermented with the production of acid and gas (CO2:H2 at a ratio of 1:1). Growth not inhibited by KCN. The V.P. reaction is usually negative. H2S is not produced from Kligler iron Agar; gelatinase tetrathionate reductase and indole are usually not produced. Ornithine is decarboxylated; malonate is not utilized.
