Pathogenesis:Soluble mediators
Other Terms:Cytokines; Chemokines; IL-2; IL-1β; IL-6; TNF; Transforming growth factor (TGF)
Description:Production of IL-2 reveals a differential pattern in IBD, with mucosal T cells in Crohn's disease producing greater amounts of IL-2, expressing higher levels of IL-2 receptor α and exhibiting greater IL-2-induced proliferation and cytotoxicity than these cells in ulcerative colitis. The production of proinflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF) is predictably increased in both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis mucosa.
