Therapeutic Strategy:Strengthening barrier function
Synonyms:Modulation of barrier function
Related Targets:Escherichia coli Nissle (EcN); anti-inflammatory proteins; human β-defensin; IL-22-binding protein; STAT3; Toll-like receptor (TLR)
Related Drugs:phosphatidylcholine (lecithin); imiquimod; mongersen
Mechanism:Escherichia coli Nissle (EcN) is a nonpathogenic Gram-negative strain that controls intestinal barrier function and induces anti-inflammatory proteins. EcN is an established clinical therapy for patients with ulcerative colitis and exhibits similar anti-inflammatory effects compared with 5-ASAs125. EcN has direct antimicrobial effects, controls biofilm formation, stimulates human β-defensin production by intestinal epithelial cells, and strengthens tight junctions by upregulating zonula occludens proteins
