此菌能产生过氧化氢酶。除纽卡斯尔生物型、血清型6及血清型4a中一种D-甘露醇阴性、D-木糖阳性生物型（有时被称为“rabaulensis志贺氏菌”）外，D-甘露醇可被发酵。血清型6的某些生物型能够发酵杜梨醇（见表2），其中一些还能从可发酵糖中产生气体。血清型6不产吲哚；在其他血清型中，吲哚产生的能力各异。这些菌株是人类和亚人类灵长类动物的肠道病原体，能引起细菌性痢疾。人类是其主要的宿主库。疾病表现可轻可重。少数情况下，患者会长期携带病原体（Levine等人，1973年）。对于携带HLA-B27组织相容性抗原的个体，感染可能导致赖特慢性关节炎综合症的并发症。模式菌株：ATCC 29903，CIP 82.48，DSM 4782。10.1002/9781118960608.gbm01168。
