Title: | Bariatric Surgery Versus Standard Obesity Treatment and the Risk of Severe Liver Disease: Data From the Swedish Obese Subjects Study. |
Abstract: | Obesity is closely associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. A minority of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease progress to liver cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease.1 Weight loss results in improvement of liver histology in persons with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.2 Because weight loss can be challenging to achieve and sustain in persons with obesity, bariatric surgery is considered a feasible therapeutic option for persons with severe obesity.3 Bariatric surgery leads to improved glucose tolerance, weight loss, and improved overall mortality.4 It is less well known if bariatric surgery also reduces the incidence of liver-related outcomes.
